In the last year, I was represented by the Patrick John Mills gallery in Ottawa and was the featured artist at every one of its monthly collective exhibitions. I’ve also had a solo exhibition in Quebec city in 2010 at the L’espace contemporain gallery as part of the Altern’art festival. I participated to many group shows in the past. Solitudes urbaines at the Maison des arts de Laval in 2005 and Génération Montréal ville peinture curated by Marc Séguin in Montreal in 2002 to name a few. My work is collected in Canada and abroad in countries such as the United States, Germany, Norway and Israel. The American book “100 Artists of the Male Figure” features my work and many arts magazines have also published it. Among them, Le Forum des Arts in France and Canadian magazines Outlooks, Être, 2Bmag, RG, Xtra and Fugues.
"Montreal artist Mathieu Laca is a unique voice in Canadian art. Strong in homoerotic and symbolic content, his work echoes the reality of how I experience life through the mind: a jungle, beautiful and wild, scary and scattered, surreal and full of symbols I try to decipher and often fail to grasp(…)” Sanita Fejzic in Xtra Magazine. "Mathieu Laca... a young lad from Montreal who is making waves in the international art world with his bold, and very graphic mythical images." Brett Taylor, Editor in Chief of Outlooks Magazine. "He has no fear. Paints balls to the wall. He is doing incredible paintings. He is what Canada needs in art." Gallerist Patrick John Mills. « Combining religious imagery of angels, nuns, and ceremonial masks with the folk-art elements of ithyphallic icons—with erect penises, animal heads, or both—Laca invites us into a fleshy, fun, fuckable world that is some kind of cross between Pierre et Gilles, and Francis Bacon. » Jordan Arseneault in 2Bmag. |
